My Story

Like many, I spent years digging for the root cause(s) of my health challenges. Although conventional medicine had its uses, it divided my body into compartments to be treated separately, rather than finding out how my ailments fit together as part of a bigger picture.

When I was 17, I contracted glandular fever, spending two weeks in bed. As I didn’t understand how important it was to treat myself kindly during recovery, I returned to ‘normal life’. This resulted in debilitating fatigue. I would get home from work and go straight to bed. This became my norm for many years.

As a teenager, I also experienced severe period pain every month. I had no regular doctor or an understanding of underlying factors. I thought the pain was normal. With every cycle, I would pop Nurofen and Panadol to help manage my pain.

My twenties were spent battling fatigue, injuries and my bodies seemingly fantastic ability to put on weight with little to no effort. The constant exercising that I did to manage my weight not only led to physical injury but was unhelpful to my fatigue.

Fast forward to my early thirties. I tried to fall pregnant with no success. The doctors referred me for invasive tests, a gynaecological referral, and finally, my first laparoscopy. They confirmed that I had grade 3 endometriosis and ‘treated’ it. Unfortunately, laparoscopic surgery is not a cure. It took another two years before I finally fell pregnant with our eldest daughter.

As you might know, endometriosis is an extremely complex disease. Having laser surgery is not necessarily a cure. After trying for our second child for years, I returned for further surgery. I also sought help from an Integrative GP who identified my Thyroid function was sub-optimal. We agreed to commence Thyroid medication as time was of the essence in trying to have another baby. In the end, I was blessed to bring our second daughter into the world after four years of trying. But I also know the pain of the month by month wait that often ends in disappointment and the loss of hope. If you have infertility and even continue to, you understand the pain of this process.

I also have a story around the health of my children that could take up three pages. What I can briefly say is that my now 16 and 10-year-olds have both had different complex health challenges. Some of those changes remain ongoing. Their health challenges have required me to work with a team of practitioners to get to the root cause and to be a strong advocate (and researcher) for my children in that space. Sometimes it felt like all of my time and money was being spent trying to help them achieve the “normal” health that we take for granted for our kids.

Thankfully, through that journey and undertaking my studies, I have learned how to manage and optimise my kid’s health. Many families have kids that seem always to get sick or never seem “healthy” but don’t have a diagnosed health condition when their GP reviewed them. No answers can leave parents not knowing where to go next to help their children. A Nutrition review may help.

Together, we got to the root cause of complex health issues – a combination of genetics and environmental triggers.

I have several health conditions that I manage, and I do not live a 100% symptom-free life. But I did discover a balance that keeps me feeling well most of the time and my Endometriosis symptoms are well managed. Managing stress, reducing excess ‘busyness’, eating the way my body prefers and plenty of moderate exercise keeps me on my path of health.
